HANS BRINKER – CAMPAIGNS FOR THE WORLD’S WORST HOTEL
Extreme honesty becomes an asset in the long running campaigns for Amsterdam’s infamous backpacker hostel. Each year, the campaigns abide by the same strategy, but change their execution, often making commentary about the hospitality industry’s worst practises, such as greenwashing. They won an Effie (effectiveness award) proving that claiming to be the worst rewards you with the best.
The Hans Brinker Hotel did the unthinkable, and opened up a second hell hole, this time in sunnier climes in Lisbon. Very much the same with a little less and a little more.
Bookstores are filled with success stories. The bestsellers. The best Mediterranean recipes. The best way to be the best entrepreneur. The world’s best worst criminals. The best hotels in the world, all lavish coffee table books, with glossy photography and little soul. Hans Brinker had amassed enough stories, marketing campaigns, gossip and unruly behaviour to warrant its own bible. Though amongs the best of the best, there was room for the worst of the worst, in a category of one.
